Chaconne Expressions is a journey of shifting moods explored across five short movements. The opening Quasi Improvisando, defined by surging gestures, leads without pause into a peaceful Andante that reimagines the guitar’s timbre, calling for the performer to evoke the sounds of a flute, a harp, and a clarinet in turn. The third, a lilting Waltz, is built upon a recurring two-bar motive. In Misterioso, a haunting line of single notes and octaves emerges at the outset and gathers momentum, pushing directly into the finale, Meccanicamente. Here, a driving perpetual motion fueled by accented syncopations brings the work to a relentless rhythmic close. A chaconne, in the Baroque tradition, relies on a harmonic pattern that is repeated throughout a single movement. Chaconne Expressions adapts this concept across a larger arc: each of the five movements serves as a distinct variation on a central harmonic progression, sometimes stated explicitly, and other times implicitly woven through the texture. --R.C.
